Montgomery County Collect for Veterans
Jeanne Sorg, the Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds is holding her annual holiday donation drive to benefit the Veteran’s Multi-Service Center (VMC), which helps veterans experiencing homelessness access services and benefits. The donation drive will run through the end of December and items can be dropped off at the Recorder of Deeds office at One Montgomery Plaza in Norristown. The Veteran’s Multi-Service Center’s “wish list” includes small personal hygiene items, new underwear, shirts, hats, gloves, and scarves. The Center is also requesting laundry detergent pods for the homeless laundry facilities. The Collect office is open to the public Monday through Friday 8:30 am until 4:00 pm. Matisse in the 1930s at the Museum of Art
By 1930, Henri Matisse — one of the giants of 20th-century art — had achieved significant international renown, yet he found himself in a deep creative slump. The turning point came in the fall of that year with a commission to decorate the main gallery of the Barnes Foundation, then located in Merion, PA. The resulting monumental mural, The Dance (1930–33), turned Matisse’s artistic practice around. This fall and winter, discover the changes in Matisse’s work and the methods of working that renewed his style in the first major exhibition ever dedicated to this pivotal decade in his artistic career. Opening first in Philadelphia, the only U.S. venue, Matisse in the 1930s contains 143 renowned and rarely seen paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and illustrated books. Matisse in the 1930s is on view now through January 29, 2023.
Fairmount Park Host “Holidays in the Park”
Tours of Four Colonial-Era Houses Festively Decorated for the Season. During the month of December, the Woodford Mansion, Historic Strawberry Mansion, Laurel Hill Mansion, and Ormiston Mansion will be decorated for the season and open to the public for special holiday tours. “Holidays in the Park” tours of the houses will take place on these dates: Woodford Mansion – 3400 West Dauphin Dr. Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout December. Historic Strawberry Mansion – 2450 Strawberry Mansion Dr. Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed after Dec. 23. Laurel Hill Mansion – 7201 N Randolph Dr. Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Ormiston Mansion – 2000 Reservoir Drive. Friday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. December 2-18. Tours of Woodford are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors, children 13-17 and students with ID. Children under 13 go free. At the three other houses, a $5 is a suggested donation.
Wreaths and garlands at Schuylkill
Ring in the holiday season at Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education by creating festive wreaths and garlands out of natural materials. Give thanks for the season as we learn about the different vines that can be used for wreath bases and then add pops of color to our creations with fragrant fruits, spices, and leaves. Each family will work together to create one wreath and one garland to either keep or gift. Please dress for the weather. Registration is required. $5 for members, $10 for non-members. Deck the Hall Light Show
Do you see what I see? Philadelphia’s majestic City Hall serves as the backdrop for nightly light shows in Center City. The west façade of the historic building is illuminated during a free show every hour at the top of the hour after dark. LumiNature at the Philadelphia Zoo
This immersive display transforms the Philadelphia Zoo’s Day-scape into a nighttime multimedia spectacle. After the animals are tucked away for the evening, the zoo lights up with more than one million holiday lights in 14 distinct zones. Electrical Light Show in Franklin Square
Franklin Square celebrates the winter season with nightly spectacle of light shows inspired by Benjamin Franklin’s legendary kite and key experiment. Free light shows —set to a soundtrack of seasonal tunes— illuminate the square every 30 minutes from 5 p.m. until close. Before or after the show, grab a burger or beverage fireside from the on-site Square Burger, play a round of festive Chilly Philly Mini Golf or hop aboard the classic Parx Liberty Carousel.
