Colorism: Oppression, Inclusion and Power
The Arturo A. Schomburg Annual Symposium takes on a different yearly theme that explores various aspects of the intricate and complex relationship of the African diaspora influences within Latin American culture abroad and in the United States. The 27th symposium this year delves into the origins and effects of Latino Colorism and Anti-Blackness on individuals, families, communities, societies, and systems. The event helps us to analyze how people of color themselves perpetuate racism and why it is crucial to acknowledge that complicity to create change. Celebrate Black History Month
The national theme for 2023 is “black resistance”, which explores how blacks have fought repression from America’s earliest days. The event will focus on the church, education, media, and voting, and is meant to impart a message of education and encouragement, designed to stimulate discussion and bridge cultures in furtherance of the national theme. Disney-100 at Franklin Institute
The House of Mouse celebrates a century of dazzling audiences with a brand-new exhibition, making its world premiere in Philadelphia. Disney100: The Exhibition opens the vaults for behind-the-scenes glimpses into the creation of the company’s most popular characters, films, shows and attractions, offering 10 themed galleries with interactive installations covering everything from Snow White to Star Wars. Office of Black Male Engagement
In honor of Black History Month, The Mayor’s Office of Black Male Engagement (OBME) is partnering with Chase Bank for this year’s Black Generational Wealth Series. The series is part of the bi-monthly My Brother’s Keeper Action Academy, a national program established by President Obama to dismantle systems of inequality and close opportunity gaps for boys and young men of color. Join OBME for a day of workshop sessions covering topics like financial literacy, accessing City resources and projects, entrepreneurship, and transferring wealth to the next generation! K-8th grade scholarships are still available for under-resourced families looking for a safe, quality educational option at a tuition-based school for fall 2023. Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia (CSFP) is accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year until March 1. Scholarship deadline: k-8th grade applications due March 1.
