Suzzette Ortiz’s Journey

How did your early experiences in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, shape your musical career?

There was always music in my household. My father played percussion and trumpet, and he was a great singer. My mother sang in choirs and played the piano. I started playing a toy piano and figuring out melodies from commercials on TV when I was four years old. My father bought me an upright piano when I was five years old. My parents enrolled in piano lessons. I’ve been playing piano since then.

What draws you to excel in various roles as a versatile artist?

There is an inner force and desire to grow and explore what’s new. As a musician, I learn various songs and music styles from different countries. As a choir director, I perform with various musical groups, from salsa, tango, and classical, and work with a South African singer. As an educator, I am responsible for constantly educating myself and preparing for newer educational trends in a continually changing society.

Could you share a moment that has profoundly impacted your approach to music?

I spent long hours studying and composing as a young pianist. At age 21, I developed severe tendonitis, not allowing me to play—I lost purpose. My parents encouraged me to go into the education field. I moved to Philadelphia to study music education. I discovered the joy of teaching. Instead of thinking of me as a solo pianist, my students became my inspiration and primary purpose. Teaching has become my life-changing song!

Can you share any specific challenges you’ve faced as a musician?

One specific challenge is being a woman in a “man’s musician world. Even though in the 21st century, things have improved for female musicians. Now and then, you will find men treating us women as if we are less. I cannot tell you how many times I have had men thinking that they are complimenting me by saying: “Despite being a woman, you sound great.” On the other hand, I work with excellent male musicians who respect me as a woman musician and for who I am. Talents, gifts, and skills are not defined by gender but by who someone is.
