The Kremlin said Tuesday that US President Donald Trump’s decision to halt military aid to Ukraine would boost Ukraine’s participation in the peace process.
“It is a decision that can push the Kyiv regime towards a peace process,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said at his daily telephone press briefing.
He added that the decision, once confirmed, would «the greatest contribution to the cause of peace» and that the US is the country that has provided Kyiv with the most military assistance since the beginning of the conflict three years ago.
Peskov said that in recent days European countries had announced their intention to increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
Referring to European NATO members, who provide more than half of the aid to Kyiv, the Kremlin spokesperson said they would «surely try to compensate for the volumes of ammunition and everything else.»
Russian President Vladimir Putin has long accused NATO countries of helping to prolong the war and the suffering of the Ukrainian people with their military supplies.
On Monday, Trump ordered a halt to all military aid to Ukraine, including that already committed or on its way, a senior American official told EFE.
According to the official, the president is very interested in achieving peace and needs «all of our partners to be committed to that goal.»
«We are pausing and reviewing our assistance to ensure that it is contributing to a solution,» the White House said in a statement.
This measure stops the delivery of weapons or equipment already in Polish territory and ready for final delivery to Ukraine, according to Fox News channel, which is well connected to the Trump administration.
The decision by the US president is the first consequence of the clash that took place Friday at the White House between Trump and his Ukranian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Both Trump and several senior US officials have suggested to Zelenskyy that he leave his post to pave the way for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, in line with Putin’s reasoning, who considers the Ukrainian president illegitimate.
