Más de 100 ex funcionarios republicanos de seguridad nacional y política exterior que desempeñaron altos cargos en administraciones presidenciales y en el Congreso han hecho pública una carta de respaldo a la vicepresidenta Harris para presidenta.

En su respaldo, esta coalición de republicanos subrayan que la vicepresidenta es el tipo de “líder firme”, y “de principios serios” que necesita nuestro país, afirmando que “la vicepresidenta Harris ha demostrado su compromiso con la defensa de los ideales que definen a nuestra nación: libertad, democracia y el Estado de Derecho” y que “ha demostrado que puede tomar decisiones en materia de seguridad nacional de una manera disciplinada, sin el constante drama y rotación del gabinete presidencial como la Administración Trump”.

Los funcionarios también adviertieron sobre el peligro que supone Donald Trump si es reelegido, citando la oposición de Trump a aceptar los resultados de las elecciones de 2020 y su papel en la incitación a un ataque violento el 6 de enero.

En su carta, se dirigen directamente a sus compañeros republicanos: “Cualquier posible preocupación [por apoyar al Partido Demócrata] palidece en comparación con el comportamiento caótico y poco ético demostrado por Donald Trump y su desprecio por los principios de gobierno constitucional de nuestra República, que se han comprobado a largo plazo”.

Declaración de apoyo de exlíderes republicanos de seguridad nacional a la vicepresidenta Harris

Somos exfuncionarios de seguridad nacional y política exterior que prestamos servicios en las administraciones de los presidentes Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush y/o Donald Trump, o como miembros republicanos del Congreso. Hemos prestado servicios en la Casa Blanca, los Departamentos de Defensa, Tesoro, Estado, Justicia, Seguridad Nacional, Comercio y otras agencias, y en el Congreso.

Creemos que el presidente de los Estados Unidos debe ser un líder serio, firme y con principios que pueda promover y defender la seguridad y los valores estadounidenses, fortalecer nuestras alianzas y proteger nuestra democracia.

Contemplamos estar en desacuerdo con Kamala Harris en muchos temas de política interna y exterior, pero creemos que ella posee las cualidades esenciales para servir como presidenta y Donald Trump no. Por lo tanto, apoyamos su elección para ser presidenta.

Nos oponemos firmemente a la elección de Donald Trump. Como presidente, promovió el caos diario en el gobierno, elogió a nuestros enemigos y socavó a nuestros aliados, politizó a las fuerzas armadas y menospreció a nuestros veteranos, priorizó su interés personal por encima de los intereses estadounidenses y traicionó nuestros valores, la democracia y los documentos fundacionales de este país.

En nuestra opinión, al incitar el violento ataque al Capitolio el 6 de enero de 2021 y defender a quienes lo cometieron, ha violado su juramento del cargo y ha traído peligro a nuestro país. Como ha dicho el ex vicepresidente Pence, «cualquiera que se ponga a sí mismo por encima de la Constitución nunca debería ser presidente de los Estados Unidos».

La susceptibilidad de Donald Trump a los halagos y la manipulación de Vladimir Putin y Xi Jinping, la afinidad inusual con otros líderes autoritarios, el desprecio por las normas de comportamiento decente, ético y legal y la caótica toma de decisiones en materia de seguridad nacional son cualidades peligrosas, como han testificado con frecuencia muchos honorables colegas republicanos y oficiales militares que ocuparon altos cargos de seguridad nacional en su administración.

No es apto para volver a ejercer como presidente, ni para ocupar ningún cargo de confianza pública.

La vicepresidenta Harris ha demostrado su compromiso con la defensa de los ideales que definen a nuestra nación: libertad, democracia y estado de derecho. Su experiencia como fiscal general de California y su liderazgo en el Comité Selecto de Inteligencia del Senado y como vicepresidenta la han ayudado a prepararse para ser presidenta.

Estamos preparados para apoyarla como presidenta porque: ha defendido constantemente el estado de derecho, la democracia y nuestros principios constitucionales; se ha comprometido a “garantizar que Estados Unidos siempre tenga la fuerza de combate más fuerte y letal del mundo” y a honrar y respetar a quienes visten el uniforme; se ha comprometido a firmar el paquete bipartidista de seguridad fronteriza, redactado bajo el liderazgo del senador republicano James Lankford y otros republicanos, que contrataría a 1.500 nuevos funcionarios de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza y proporcionaría más recursos para la aplicación de la ley, pero al que se opuso Donald Trump para evitar darle al presidente Biden cualquier ventaja política; ha apoyado una OTAN fuerte para hacer frente a Rusia y proteger la seguridad europea y estadounidense y se ha mantenido firme en su apoyo a Ucrania;
ha declarado su intención de garantizar que Estados Unidos esté a la altura de la competencia económica y militar con China.

Declaró su intención de “defender siempre el derecho de Israel a defenderse” y “tomar todas las medidas que sean necesarias para defender nuestras fuerzas y nuestros intereses contra Irán y los terroristas respaldados por Irán”.
Demostró que puede participar en la toma ordenada de decisiones sobre seguridad nacional, sin el drama constante y la rotación del Gabinete de la Administración Trump; y se comprometió a nombrar a un republicano en su Gabinete para alentar una diversidad de puntos de vista y restaurar una medida de bipartidismo y cortesía en nuestra política interna.


Apreciamos que muchos republicanos prefieren a Donald Trump antes que a Kamala Harris, por diversas razones. Reconocemos y no menospreciamos sus posibles preocupaciones, incluidas algunas de las posiciones defendidas por el ala izquierda del partido demócrata. Pero cualquier posible preocupación palidece en comparación con el comportamiento caótico y poco ético demostrado por Donald Trump y su desprecio por los principios probados por el tiempo de gobernanza constitucional de nuestra República.

Su naturaleza impredecible no es la virtud negociadora que ensalza. Por el contrario, en materia de seguridad nacional, su comportamiento invita a un comportamiento igualmente errático por parte de nuestros adversarios, lo que amenaza irresponsablemente con consecuencias globales temerarias y peligrosas.

En resumen, no se puede confiar en que Donald Trump “apoye y defienda la Constitución de los Estados Unidos contra todos los enemigos, extranjeros y nacionales… y mantenga una verdadera fe y lealtad hacia ella”. Creemos que Kamala Harris puede hacerlo, e instamos a otros estadounidenses a que se unan a nosotros para apoyarla.
