The Republican Party and Fox News chose trying to distract the public with other issues which they had the audacity to say were more important than the January 6th hearings.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) argues those hearings are a distraction: “That pack of tortillas that I just bought, used to look like the regular corn tortillas. Now they look like mini tortillas. That’s what Americans are talking about.”
While I love corn tortillas, these tortillas are not trying to destroy our democracy!
Any tortilla expert would realize that the smaller corn tortillas are for tacos.
Right-wing America is working hard to try to convince their audience that the attack on our democracy was not a big deal, and that there were worst demonstrations. However, none except Jan. 6th had organized military breaking into a federal building assaulting police and chanting that they wanted to kill the vice president. And as we have assumed —and now see more evidence— that the then President planned and encouraged people to attack the Capitol and interrupt a most important democratic process: The peaceful change of the presidency.
This horrific attack will be seen historically as the greatest threat to our democracy, and that it was fueled by Trump’s ‘big lie’, that the election was corrupt. Many close to Trump told him that he lost the election and that it was not stolen. But he ignored the truth and continued to repeat the ‘big lie.’
This ‘big lie’ continues to be the new platform for many within the Republican Party. In the years to come all these officials will have to live with the fact that an incompetent president who spent his entire life, cheating and assaulting women was able to scare so many into accepting the ‘big lie’ and denying the truth.
The first presentation of the information by the Jan. 6th committee was most powerful. Caroline Edwards a Capitol police officer was assaulted, injured, and still got up to fight to defend the capitol and our elected officials and their staff. Listening to this woman made me feel proud of her and, at the same time, I got angrier at the thought that our police could be openly attacked, and that right-wing America —which have said they loved first responders— have deserted these officers.
Caroline moved our hearts as she described what she experienced on that day. «What I saw was just a war scene,» she said. «It was something like I had seen out of the movies. I could not believe my eyes. There were officers on the ground. They were bleeding. They were throwing up. I saw friends with blood all over their faces. I was slipping in people’s blood. I was catching people as they fell. It was carnage. It was chaos.»
«Never in my wildest dreams did I think that as a police officer and as a law enforcement officer, I would find myself in the middle of a battle,» she continued. «I am trained to detain a couple of subjects and handle a crowd, but I’m not combat trained. And that day, it was just hours of hand-to-hand combat.»
All citizens must listen to these hearings and understand the plans that were made to destroy our democracy. And we must demand how our then president did not take any actions to stop the rioters. When he finally sent out a message, he ended by saying “we love you” to the insurgents.
I tend to respect and cherish the police who did their best against incredible odds for such a long time.
In the days ahead we all must listen to these hearings and become educated about who planned and lit the fuse on this violence against freedom.
