Walking onto a college campus is a magical experience. Each step shows possibility, opportunity, growth, collaboration, and promise. Recently several students of ours visited Villanova University and the University of Valley Forge. As our students strolled through the beautiful buildings and vibrant leafy trees adorning the walkways, they came away with a better vision for their future and a glimpse into their academic potential. On Friday, October 21st, Dr. Palladino, Director of Teacher Development, visited Valley Forge University along with his colleague Allyssa Hampson, and six high school students. Two of the students are in the Teacher Education major at our high school. The other four students were interested in touring the school. They were able to meet several university students, attend lunch with faculty, and observe college level classes. The small university has around 400 students on campus. Many of the students are enrolled in the Digital Communication and Media major. Palladino also prepared an excellent presentation for the University of Valley Forge’s education students. His inspiring lecture shared his own journey as a teacher, professor, and now instructional coach. The speaking opportunity allowed for our students to explore the university campus and for the university’s students to explore a career at Esperanza Academy. Several students asked questions about our school as Palladino shared about the school’s mission and hiring opportunities.

On Monday, October 24th, the Esperanza Academy College, and Career Department brought 12 of our high school students to visit Villanova University. Julissa Lora-Vargas, one of our College and Career Counselors, said, “On our trip to Villanova University the students were able to explore the majors/minors that are available to them. Most of the students were interested in their Criminal Justice program. Students were able to tour the campus with a current [Villanova] student where they received information about campus living as well as all the programs they have to offer.”

College visits are important for high school students. Walking on campus allows students to get a feel for the school culture, student life, and college experience. The Esperanza Academy College and Career office has many college campus visits planned and countless college ambassadors visit our school campus to share abundant information on university life. We look forward to connecting with more and more universities and giving our students plenty of opportunities to plan their post-graduate careers.
