What makes the holiday season special? Is it the twinkling lights, the festive music, or the exchange of gifts? The traditions of East Akron Community School (EACS) students make the holidays truly magical.
When asked «What is your favorite holiday tradition and what makes it special to you?» and «What is something unique or meaningful about the way your family celebrates the holidays?», their responses painted a vibrant picture of family, love and community.
For young third-grader Baylee Nieves-Sanchez, Christmas Eve is a double celebration, marking both the eve of Christmas and her mom’s birthday. «We bake cookies and milk for Santa,» she shared, capturing the simple joys of the season. Her classmate, third-grader Yasir Johnson, loves the tradition of baking cookies and adorning the Christmas tree with family photos, creating a tangible connection to the past.
As students grow older, their traditions evolve. Eighth-grader Hailey Terrero-German cherishes the annual family pajama party and the tradition of sharing accomplishments and wishes. Her family’s commitment to giving back is equally important, as they help local shelters and send aid to their native country.
Israel Santiago, another eighth-grader, finds joy in the simple act of spending time with loved ones. «Christmas is special because I get to spend time with all my family,» he said. For eleventh-grader Maria Burgos Rios, Christmas Eve is a time for family, laughter, and the anticipation of gift-giving. She values the tradition of saying «Merry Christmas» and sharing hugs, even as she acknowledges the bittersweet nature of missing loved ones who have passed.
Lesly Lopez, a tenth-grader, reflects on her family’s immigrant experience and how Christmas has evolved for her. Initially, she focused on the material aspects of the holiday, but as she grew older, she realized the true meaning of Christmas: family, love, and togetherness. «Christmas is about presence, and that’s why it makes it so special to me,» she explained.
The holiday traditions of EACS students are a testament to the diversity and richness of our communities. From the simple pleasures of baking cookies and adorning Christmas trees with family photos to the profound reflections on family, culture, and giving back, these customs remind us of what truly matters in life. These traditions connect us to our past, strengthen our bonds with loved ones, and shape our future.
As we celebrate the holiday season, let’s embrace the spirit of these young students and cherish the traditions that make our lives meaningful. Whether it’s a family gathering, a religious observance, or a simple act of kindness, these traditions bring joy, hope, and a sense of belonging. Let us honor these traditions and pass them on to future generations, ensuring that the spirit of the holidays continues to shine brightly.
