Allentown, PA – The City of Allentown honored the 181st anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence with a special flag-raising ceremony at City Hall on Friday, February 23. The event brought together local leaders, community members, and distinguished guests to celebrate the contributions of the Dominican community to the city. The celebration was put together by a group of community leaders including Dr. Cynthia Monta, Vice President of the Allentown City Council, and Genesis Ortega, Communications Manager for the City of Allentown.

The main ceremony took place in front of City Hall and began with an invocation led by Ian Holmes. The honor of raising the Dominican flag was given to Juan Veloz, a well-respected community leader and owner of Los Primos Tire Shop, who has lived in Allentown for over 50 years. Traditional cultural elements, including popular music by the local Mega radio station and locals dressed as diablos cojuelos, complemented the main stage.

Mayor Matt Tuerk, who spoke at the event, highlighted the importance of the Dominican community in Allentown’s cultural and economic development. “It is becoming the center of the Dominican community in Pennsylvania,” he later told Impacto.

Following the official proceedings, attendees gathered at Sarandonga Restaurant in American Plaza on Hamilton Street for a lively Dominican celebration, featuring traditional music and sancocho.

The annual event continues to strengthen the bonds between the Dominican community and the city of Allentown, celebrating heritage, culture, and unity.
