“The reason I volunteered is that I really (want to) focus on working on the environment and keeping the community beautiful, and it always should be,” said Vanessa Rodriguez-Matos, a high school student at Esperanza Academy. She and several other students from the Academy teamed up with over 50 other volunteers on November 21st for the Hunting Park Tree Planting Event. TD Bank sponsored the event along with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), and volunteers came from Esperanza, PHS, Action Tank, neighboring community Tree Tenders groups, as well as many longstanding community leaders.
Hunting Park has the highest heat index in the city. Due to this, several green initiatives have been undertaken by the community to lower the heat index and bring even more natural beauty to the area. This event alone planted 43 trees in the neighborhood. These trees will grow and benefit our community now and for generations to come. The event was close to many students’ hearts as they expressed their love for the environment and desire to see a more beautiful and clean community.
Desiree Franco, also an Esperanza Academy high school student, expressed that, “Especially in our city of Philadelphia, a city where there’s more trash on the sidewalk than there is cars on the street in a highway, I think it’s especially important for at least myself to do my part in picking up any trash on the floor, not littering, and taking opportunities such as this one to help out the environment even by a bit! I like to believe that anything counts no matter how insignificant it may seem in the grand scheme of things.”
Tree-planting events take place in Hunting Park twice a year, in the spring and fall. The next event is scheduled for April 2021.
Estudiantes Esperanza reflexionan sobre la plantación de árboles

“La razón por la que me ofrecí como voluntaria es que realmente quiero concentrarme en trabajar en el medio ambiente y mantener la comunidad hermosa, y siempre debería serlo”, dijo Vanessa Rodríguez-Matos, una estudiante de secundaria en Esperanza Academy. Ella y otros estudiantes de la Academia se unieron con más de 50 voluntarios el 21 de noviembre para el evento de plantación de árboles en Hunting Park. TD Bank patrocinó el evento junto con la Sociedad de Horticultura de Pensilvania (PHS), y vinieron voluntarios de Esperanza, PHS, Action Tank, grupos de Tree Tenders de la comunidad vecina, así como de muchos líderes comunitarios de larga data.
Hunting Park tiene el índice de calor más alto de la ciudad. Debido a esto, la comunidad ha emprendido varias iniciativas ecológicas para reducir el índice de calor y traer más belleza natural a la zona. Este evento solo plantó 43 árboles en el vecindario. Estos árboles crecerán y beneficiarán a nuestra comunidad ahora y para las generaciones venideras. El evento significó mucho para los estudiantes, quienes expresaron su amor por el medio ambiente, y su deseo de ver una comunidad más hermosa y limpia.
Desiree Franco, también estudiante de secundaria de la Academia Esperanza, expresó que, “Especialmente en nuestra ciudad de Filadelfia, una ciudad donde hay más basura en la acera que autos en la calle, creo que es especialmente importante, al menos para mí, hacer mi parte al recoger la basura del suelo, no tirar basura, y aprovechar oportunidades como esta para ayudar al medio ambiente, aunque sea un poco. Me gusta creer que cualquier cosa cuenta, sin importar cuán insignificante pueda parecer en la totalidad”.
Los eventos de plantación de árboles se llevan a cabo en Hunting Park dos veces al año, en primavera y otoño. El próximo evento está programado para abril de 2021.
