At just 17 years old, Kailyn Michelle Valera has already accomplished what many only dream of. A senior at Esperanza Academy, Kailyn is working toward a dual graduation this May, earning both a high school diploma and an associate degree in business. Despite facing serious health challenges, she has excelled academically and athletically, all while laying the groundwork for a career in real estate. Kailyn’s inspiring story is one of resilience, determination, and a desire to uplift her community. Here, she shares the challenges she has overcome, the role Esperanza Academy has played in her journey, and her vision for the future.

What goal or dream are you currently pursuing, and how are you working toward it?
My dream is to have a successful career in real estate. I’m enrolled in an early college program, so this May, I’ll graduate with both a high school diploma and an associate degree in business. I’ve also started an internship with Keller Williams Real Estate, where I’m gaining practical experience. After turning 18, I plan to get my real estate license and continue my education with a bachelor’s degree.

Beyond my career, I want to inspire others—especially younger generations—to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.

What challenges have you faced on your journey?
Three years ago, I underwent major hip surgery to correct dysplasia, followed by months of physical therapy to relearn basic movements. Later, I was diagnosed with Autonomic Dysfunction, which caused frequent fainting spells. Managing these conditions while staying on top of my academics and athletics was incredibly difficult.

Despite the setbacks, I worked hard to recover and returned to the softball field. As a freshman, I became the only varsity starting catcher in my league. That experience taught me the power of perseverance and the importance of support from my family, coaches, and school community.

How has Esperanza Academy supported you in achieving your goals?
Esperanza has provided incredible opportunities, from dual enrollment to leadership roles. The school’s supportive environment has allowed me to thrive, even during challenging times. My teachers and coaches have been my biggest cheerleaders, helping me develop both academically and personally.

Through Esperanza, I’ve gained confidence, valuable skills, and the belief that I can achieve any goal I set for myself.

How do you strive to be a role model for your peers?
I aim to show others that success isn’t about being perfect—it’s about overcoming challenges and staying determined. As a softball team captain, I encourage my teammates to embrace mistakes as part of growth.

My parents have been my biggest inspirations, teaching me the importance of education, humility, and perseverance. I hope to pass those values on by inspiring others to dream big, work hard, and believe in their potential.
