Breaking with Republican nominee Doug Mastriano, Republican leaders – including current and former officeholders from across Pennsylvania – endorse Josh Shapiro.
PENNSYLVANIA. – Today, in the first wave of Republican endorsements, nine Pennsylvania Republican leaders announced their endorsement of Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s campaign for Governor of Pennsylvania. This first group of Republican endorsers for Shapiro includes former Congressmen Charlie Dent and Jim Greenwood, the current Chair of the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners, the former Montgomery County GOP Chair, the first female Justice of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court, a former Republican Lieutenant Governor, and former Republican legislative leaders.
In endorsing Josh Shapiro, these Republican leaders highlighted his long record of bringing people together to deliver real results – and Doug Mastriano’s extreme and dangerous positions that are out-of-touch with the majority of Pennsylvanians.
“In order to meet this moment and address the challenges facing Pennsylvania, Republicans, Independents, and Democrats must come together – and I am grateful to receive the endorsement of so many Republican leaders who recognize the stakes of this Governor’s race,” said Attorney General Josh Shapiro. “I have a proven track record of bringing people together to deliver real results, and as Governor, I will bring leaders together from both sides of the aisle to cut taxes and bring down costs, keep our families safe, and take our Commonwealth forward. From now until Election Day, we will continue growing the broad coalition behind my campaign.”
“I’ve been a Republican my entire life, and I have always supported Pennsylvania’s Republican Governors – but in this election, I am proud to endorse Josh Shapiro,” said former Congressman Charlie Dent. “Josh has integrity and always works to bring people together. We may not always agree on every policy position, but that is to be expected. His focus on improving our economy, strengthening our schools, and keeping our communities safe is what Pennsylvania needs now. Doug Mastriano, on the other hand, is an extremist who is a threat to the rule of law and the constitutional order. I am proud to endorse Josh Shapiro, and I look forward to working together to elect him as our Commonwealth’s next Governor.”
“I have proudly voted for the Republican candidate for Governor throughout my life, but I cannot vote for someone as extreme and dangerous as Doug Mastriano,” said former Congressman Jim Greenwood. “Mastriano continues to fan the flames of division, doubling down on his threats to undermine our democracy and attacking anyone who dares to criticize him. Pennsylvanians deserve better in our next Governor, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse Josh Shapiro – a man of integrity who will not only defend the foundations of our democracy, but bring people together to serve Pennsylvania.”
“I’ve known and served with Josh for many years, and I know that he will always put Pennsylvania first and do what’s right,” said former Speaker of the House Denny O’Brien. “In the Legislature, Josh championed some of the strongest ethics reforms in Pennsylvania’s history, and as Attorney General he’s continued to work with Republicans and Democrats alike to get things done. That’s a stark contrast with his opponent, who continues to divide us and waste time and taxpayer money on his conspiracy theories and plans to upend Pennsylvania’s elections. We deserve a Governor who will bring people together, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse Josh Shapiro.”
“As the first female Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, I know the stakes of this Governor’s race and I know Josh Shapiro is someone we can trust to bring people together to solve the problems facing our Commonwealth,” said former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Sandra Schultz Newman. “Doug Mastriano is the exact opposite. He is extreme, he is divisive, and his priorities are completely wrong. We must elect Josh Shapiro, because he’ll lead with integrity and always be honest with the people of Pennsylvania.”
The current and former Republican leaders who are endorsing Josh today include:
• Charlie Dent, Former Congressman, Lehigh County
• Jim Greenwood, Former Congressman, Bucks County
• Sandra Schultz Newman, Former Justice of the PA Supreme Court, Montgomery County
