Tonight, in a special election in Pennsylvania’s 35th House District, Democrat Dan Goughnour clinched victory, securing a one-seat Democratic majority once again to continue to move Pennsylvania forward.
A reminder: DNC Chair Ken Martin campaigned with Goughnour in February on the first stop of his “organizing everywhere” tour.
The DNC congratulates Democratic candidate Dan Goughnour for his victory in tonight’s Pennsylvania legislative special election. Thanks to this victory, Democrats will retain the majority in the state House and continue to deliver for Pennsylvania families.
Following Goughnour’s victory, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“After serving his community for years as a police officer and local school board member, now Dan Goughnour will fight for families in the Pennsylvania state House. Rep.-elect Goughnour’s victory not only ensures Pennsylvanians living in the 35th district have a committed representative in the state legislature – it secures the House majority for Pennsylvania Democrats so that they can stand up to Trump’s mayhem in Washington, defend Governor Josh Shapiro from constitutional amendments to bypass him in the legislature, and continue to expand job opportunities, strengthen schools, and create safe communities in Pennsylvania. Expanding the Democratic Party begins in the states and down-ballot wins like Rep.-elect Goughnour’s offer a powerful rebuke of Trump and Elon Musk’s MAGA agenda.”
Goughnour’s victory comes on the heels of special election victories earlier this year in Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota and other states across the country as Democrats build back power starting at the grassroots. While Trump and MAGA Republicans govern for the ultra-wealthy, Democrats fight for working people, community by community, block by block. The message is clear: Americans are sick of Trump’s antics and are ready to reject him and his Republican lackeys at the ballot box.
The next important elections are next week in Wisconsin and Florida and the DNC is all hands on deck to continue our momentum and build infrastructure everywhere.
