Experience on February 27, offering an intimate look at the historic journey of a Philadelphia high school cheer team. Developed in collaboration with Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media, alongside The WorkShop Content Studios and FreshFly Films, the series follows the co-ed cheer squad from George Washington High School as they overcome adversity and break new ground in competitive cheerleading.
The team, affectionately known as the “G-Dub” squad, made history by becoming the first from the School District of Philadelphia to advance to the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) High School Nationals—the world’s largest cheerleading competition.
Directed by Philadelphia native Matt Howley, who dubs the project “the Rocky of cheerleading,” Spirit captures not only the athletic prowess of these young competitors but also the profound impact of teamwork and community spirit.
According to a press release by Comcast Corporation, Spirit delves into the challenges faced by the squad, which competes without the advantages of elite training camps or well-established feeder programs. Instead, the series spotlights how sheer determination, creative problem-solving, and unwavering camaraderie propelled the team to challenge the so-called “elite” and emerge victorious against all odds. This narrative of resilience and the transformative power of sport is expected to resonate deeply with audiences, particularly in a city known for its grit and passion.
Comcast’s Black Experience, a platform dedicated to celebrating diverse voices and original Black storytelling, stated that the series will be presented as part of an ongoing effort to uplift inspiring local stories.
Loren Hudson, SVP and Chief Diversity Officer for Comcast, remarked, “This project embodies the heart and determination of Philadelphia. Spirit not only celebrates extraordinary athletic achievements but also reinforces the idea that hard work and unity can overcome any obstacle.”
According to its producers, with its premiere on February 27, Spirit promises to deliver more than just thrilling athletic performances—it offers a window into the lives of young athletes who are rewriting their own stories and, in doing so, inspiring an entire community. As viewers prepare to cheer on the underdogs, the series serves as a testament to the enduring power of perseverance and the transformative impact of believing in the impossible.
