On December 4, 2024, the Philadelphia Foundation, in partnership with the Lenfest Institute for Journalism and supported by a grant from the William Penn Foundation, unveiled Philly Gives—a new philanthropic initiative designed to bolster nonprofit organizations providing vital services in Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs.
Philly Gives, conceptualized by Janet Haas, president emeritus of the William Penn Foundation and a practicing physician, aims to foster a culture of giving in Philadelphia. Her vision has catalyzed collaboration among the region’s leading philanthropic and journalistic institutions, paving the way for a community-driven fund that addresses critical needs.
From November 25, 2024, to January 31, 2025, nine selected nonprofit organizations will be featured in prominent media outlets, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Philadelphia Tribune, Impacto, WURD Radio, 6abc, and New Mainstream Press (Metro Chinese Weekly and Metro Viet News). This media campaign aims to amplify the impact of organizations tackling urgent regional challenges such as affordable housing, food security, healthcare access, youth development, and workforce training.
“This initiative represents a powerful opportunity for the community to come together and support organizations that are truly making a difference,” said Pedro Ramos, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Foundation. “By connecting donors with these frontline NGOs, we are investing in a brighter, more resilient future for our region.”
This year’s program will benefit nine nonprofits, chosen by a committee of community and civic leaders for their exceptional contributions to creating a more equitable Philadelphia: GALAEI, Ann Silverman Community Health Clinic, Hopeworks, ACLAMO, VietLead, Why Not Prosper, Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, YEAHPhilly!, and Young Men & Women in Charge Foundation (YMWIC).
The Philly Gives launch event, held at the 6abc studios, featured project manager Martin Alfaro as host, along with speeches by key collaborators, including Pedro Ramos, Janet Haas, Jim Friedlich (Executive Director of the Lenfest Institute for Journalism), and Romona Riscoe Benson (Director of Corporate and Community Impact at PECO). Ernie Prazenica, General Manager of ABC Philadelphia, served as the event’s emcee.
The event also fostered connections between attendees, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among media outlets, organizations, and funders to amplify the initiative’s mission. Attendees were invited to donate and participate in ensuring the project’s growth and sustainability, inspired by similar successful efforts in the region.
